Ganglion cysts are non-cancerous lumps that are most commonly found developing along the tendons and joints of your wrists, hands, ankles, and feet. These lumps are typically round or oval and filled with jelly-like fluid.
Small ganglion cysts can be the size of a pea, while larger ones can be around an inch in diameter. They can be painful when pressed on and even interfere with joint movement.
If left untreated, cysts can cause pain, tingling, numbness, or muscle weakness.
After a physical exam and confirmation that the lump is a ganglion cyst, we typically drain the cyst with a needle to relieve the discomfort. Removing the cyst surgically is also an option in severe cases. If you have no symptoms, no treatment is necessary, and the cyst may go away on its own.
However, you should seek treatment upon noticing a lump forming or if you have unexplained pain in your joints where the cysts usually form.
